Florida University Emerges as New Hotspot for Measles
A minimum of 12 individuals have contracted the highly contagious virus at Ave Maria University, a private Catholic institution located near Naples, Florida, with three requiring hospitalization, media in Fort Myers reported Tuesday. Initial cases surfaced on Jan. 29.
Campus administrators informed students that the Florida Department of Health has deployed a specialized response team to execute contact tracing operations and suppress viral spread. In correspondence obtained by media, Dean of Students Daniel Lendman stated health authorities believe the cases "most likely originated with a student's holiday travel from another state."
Certain students expressed skepticism regarding whether official tallies capture the outbreak's true magnitude. "I'm sure there's a lot more," student Josephine Miller told media. "A lot of my friends have said people have come down with the sickness."
The Florida cluster emerges amid accelerating measles outbreaks spreading across the nation.
No fewer than 17 states have documented cases year-to-date, including confirmed infections linked to international travel at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a connected case at Clemson University in South Carolina, state health agencies reported.
South Carolina officials announced Tuesday that 29 additional infections were detected in recent days, while outbreaks in Utah and Arizona have infected hundreds more, intensifying alarm among public health experts.
