Volusia County Uses Traffic Citation Revenue to Support Driver Education for Local Schools

The Volusia County Council approved $284,060 on Tuesday, Oct. 20, to support driver education programs offered through Volusia County Schools, helping young drivers gain valuable behind-the-wheel experience and develop the knowledge and skills needed to navigate roadways safely.

The funding, provided through the Dori Slosberg Driver Education Program, will support after-school, weekend, and summer driver education courses during the 2026-27 fiscal year. The investment will allow the School District to provide additional instructional opportunities, replace aging training vehicles, and purchase educational materials and equipment to enhance hands-on learning.

The Dori Slosberg Driver Education Program is a statewide initiative established under Florida law that allows counties to support local driver education programs through a fee collected from qualifying civil traffic citations. The revenue must be used to enhance driver and traffic safety education programs, allowing funds generated through traffic violations to be reinvested in educating the next generation of drivers.

Although Volusia County Schools administers the program, participation is not limited to public school students. Driver education courses are available to all eligible high school-age students residing in Volusia County, including those attending private schools or receiving homeschooling instruction. During the previous school year, more than 30 students not enrolled in public schools took driver education courses at public high schools.

Through its partnership with Volusia County Schools, the County continues to support driver education opportunities that help young motorists build confidence, develop responsible driving habits, and gain practical experience before traveling independently on public roadways.
