Flash Flood Emergency Declared in Florida as Torrential Rain Submerges Roads
The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Melbourne reported that between 15 and 20 inches (38.1 to 50.8 centimeters) of rain had accumulated across the affected areas by 11:35 a.m. local time (1635 GMT). Forecasters warned that another 2 to 4 inches (5.08 to 10.16 centimeters) could fall, potentially worsening the flooding.
The emergency alert covered southeastern Brevard County along Florida's east-central coast, an area that includes Melbourne and Palm Bay. Residents were urged to move to elevated locations immediately as authorities warned that the rapidly rising floodwaters posed a serious threat to life.
Local officials reported extensive flooding across the county's road network, with particularly severe conditions in southern areas. Residents were advised to remain indoors whenever possible and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary, especially on roads affected by rising water.
The flooding also disrupted education services, prompting Brevard Public Schools to cancel classes on Monday, according to the Florida Department of Education.
Beyond Brevard County, flood watches and flash flood warnings were issued for several areas across central and southern Florida as heavy rainfall continued to affect the region.
NWS offices in Melbourne, Miami and Key West called on residents to remain vigilant, monitor updated forecasts and follow instructions issued by emergency management authorities as weather conditions evolved.
The weather agency also warned the public against attempting to cross flooded roads or walk through floodwaters, emphasizing that even seemingly shallow water can be dangerous. It noted that most flood-related fatalities occur inside vehicles, underscoring the risks of driving through submerged streets.
